The beloved Grand House Chinese Restaurant, a staple of Binondo during the 1960s, is set to reopen in San Juan, bringing a taste of nostalgia back to its loyal patrons.
Founded by the late Benito Teng (Ting Bieng Toh), Grand House was renowned for its expansive venue and authentic Chinese cuisine, making it a favored spot for family gatherings and community events. The restaurant operated successfully until its closure in the late 1980s due to renovations of its original location.
Amah, the matriarch of the Teng family and daughter-in-law of Ting Bieng Toh, learned traditional recipes directly from the Cantonese chefs at the original establishment. Even after its closure, she preserved these culinary traditions for family meals. Today, the fourth generation of the Teng family has revived Grand House, with each member contributing their unique expertise.
Owner and Chef Betrina Co highlights the restaurant’s commitment to authenticity, stating, “As a tribute to Amah and our ancestors, Grand House presents a new era of authentic Chinese cuisine. We aim to preserve the joy of sharing a meal with loved ones in a welcoming environment.” Betrina has collaborated closely with Amah to reintroduce signature dishes like Hong Ma with Cuapao, Kiampeng, and Deconstructed Fresh Lumpia, subtly adapting them for contemporary tastes.
The reopening of Grand House marks not just a return to its culinary roots but a new chapter in its storied history, inviting both older and younger generations to experience its rich heritage.
