Chinese steamed pork buns, also known as baozi, are a beloved traditional dish in Chinese cuisine. These soft, fluffy buns are filled with tender, flavorful pork and steamed to perfection. They are a popular street food and dim sum item and are enjoyed by people of all ages. The process of making steamed pork buns might seem complicated at first, but with the right guidance, it becomes an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Ingredients for Chinese Steamed Pork Buns

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary ingredients. Below is the list of items you’ll need to make the dough and filling for your Chinese steamed pork buns.

For the Bun Dough:

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast
  • ½ cup of warm water
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • ½ teaspoon of salt

For the Pork Filling:

  • 300g ground pork
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Shaoxing wine (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 spring onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Make Chinese Steamed Pork Buns

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

Start by activating the yeast. In a small bowl, combine ½ cup of warm water with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Stir well and then sprinkle 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast over the mixture. Allow the yeast to dissolve and bubble for about 5-10 minutes. If the mixture doesn’t bubble, your yeast may be expired, so it’s best to start over.

In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour with ½ teaspoon of salt. Once the yeast mixture is ready, pour it into the flour mixture and stir until a dough forms. You may need to add more water or flour depending on the consistency. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest in a warm area for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Step 2: Prepare the Pork Filling

While the dough is resting, start preparing the filling. In a bowl, combine the ground pork with 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, chopped spring onion, and sesame oil to the mixture. Mix everything together thoroughly until the pork absorbs all the flavors.

If you’re using Shaoxing wine, add it to the filling mixture for an extra depth of flavor. Once your filling is ready, set it aside to marinate while the dough rises.

Step 3: Shape the Buns

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Divide the dough into small equal portions, each around 50g in weight. Roll each portion into a ball and flatten it into a round disc about 4 inches wide. The center should be slightly thicker than the edges.

Place a generous tablespoon of the pork filling in the center of each disc. Carefully fold the edges of the dough around the filling, pinching the top to seal it. This will form a pleated bun. Place each bun on a square of parchment paper to prevent sticking.

Step 4: Steam the Buns

Prepare your steamer by bringing water to a boil. Place the buns into the steamer, ensuring they don’t touch each other to prevent sticking. Cover the steamer with a lid and steam the buns for 12-15 minutes, or until the buns have become puffed and fluffy.

For best results, make sure the water in your steamer is consistently hot, and check the buns occasionally to ensure they’re not overcrowded. If needed, steam the buns in batches.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

Once your Chinese steamed pork buns are ready, serve them hot with a side of soy sauce or chili oil for dipping. These buns are perfect as a snack, appetizer, or even a main course when paired with a side dish.

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Chinese Steamed Pork Buns

1. Keep the Filling Moist

To ensure that the filling remains moist and flavorful, don’t skip the cornstarch in the filling. It helps to bind the ingredients together and lock in moisture during the steaming process.

2. Use Fresh Yeast

For a light and fluffy bun, always use fresh yeast. If your yeast has expired, your dough may not rise properly, resulting in dense buns.

3. Adjust the Pork Filling to Your Taste

The filling recipe is versatile. Feel free to add vegetables like mushrooms or bamboo shoots for extra texture, or adjust the seasoning based on your preference for sweetness or saltiness.

4. Don’t Overcrowd the Steamer

When steaming the buns, ensure there is enough space between them to allow for proper expansion. Overcrowding can result in unevenly steamed buns.

Conclusion

Making Chinese steamed pork buns from scratch is a fun and rewarding process. With this step-by-step guide, you’ll be able to create soft, flavorful buns that are sure to impress your family and friends. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different fillings or adjust the seasoning to your liking. Once you master the basic technique, you can customize your buns to suit your taste. Enjoy the delicious results and the joy of sharing homemade Chinese steamed pork buns!
