The World Food Program (WFP) issued a compelling call on Tuesday, urging the establishment of humanitarian corridors for the Gaza Strip while emphasizing the critical need for the secure passage of its personnel and essential assistance.
In an official statement, the WFP disclosed the launch of an emergency operation aimed at providing food assistance to over 800,000 individuals in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, who currently face severe shortages of food, water, and vital supplies.
The food agency has already taken action by distributing ready-to-eat provisions to 73,000 individuals residing in displaced-persons shelters within Gaza. However, mounting concerns surround the availability of food items in local shops, as supplies rapidly dwindle due to the complete siege imposed on the Palestinian territory by Israel on Monday, in response to the deadly Hamas attacks that took place on Saturday.
With all borders and checkpoints between Gaza and Israel now sealed, the WFP has raised alarms, highlighting how this closure exacerbates the crisis by impeding the delivery of crucial aid to the region.
The agency has emphasized that, with the possibility of replenishing its stocks through humanitarian corridors, it stands prepared to provide food to an estimated 300,000 people. The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated, and the WFP is resolutely committed to alleviating the growing humanitarian predicament faced by the residents of Gaza and the West Bank.
