The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank (BRAFB) has initiated its summer program aimed at addressing the issue of food insecurity among children in the region. Participating in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), BRAFB has set up 13 locations to ensure that children have access to nutritious meals, vital for their learning, play, and overall growth.
According to BRAFB, the statistics reveal that 1 in 7 children in Virginia faces food insecurity, highlighting the critical need for such programs. The Summer Food Service Program targets children who may lack access to nutritious meals during the summer break, especially those who rely on free or reduced-price meals during the school year. The program offers a variety of nutritious foods including breakfast items, vegetables, fruits, and protein-rich dishes, all provided at no cost to the children. This initiative not only ensures that children have access to essential nutrition but also aids in their healthy development, enabling them to thrive and remain on track for their growth.
