LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The annual ABC7 Feed SoCal food drive is in full swing, mobilizing generous donations to aid families grappling with hunger and food insecurity across Southern California.
This vital campaign supports numerous local food banks, including the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, which plays a crucial role in distributing food to those in need.
“It is essential that people support the Feed SoCal campaign to help us and other Southern California food banks distribute more food to the community,” emphasized Roger Castle, the chief development officer at the L.A. Regional Food Bank.
The L.A. Regional Food Bank depends heavily on partnerships with companies like Marriott and U.S. Bank, particularly during the summer months.
“With schools out, many families are forced to choose between paying rent or buying food,” explained Silvano Merlo of Marriott.
At the food bank, volunteers diligently pack boxes with items such as ramen and canned goods, preparing them for distribution.
“The food bank serves over 900,000 individuals monthly,” noted Joanna Ho of U.S. Bank. “To physically contribute to filling these boxes, knowing they will feed people in need, is an incredibly rewarding experience.”
Some of the packed food is loaded onto trucks for distribution by volunteers from organizations like Ocean Gate Ministries.
“We not only deliver, but families also come to us,” said Ruben Sanders of Ocean Gate Ministries. “We receive fresh vegetables, fresh bread—all high-quality, fresh items that we can distribute quickly.”
The next Feed SoCal event is scheduled for Friday, June 14, from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Stater Bros. Market on Whittier Boulevard in Whittier. Community members are encouraged to stop by and donate non-perishable foods to help feed families across Southern California.
