Chinese Beef Chow Mein is a popular and delicious dish that combines tender beef, crispy noodles, and a flavorful sauce. This dish is simple to prepare, full of vibrant vegetables, and packed with savory taste. In this article, we will guide you through the process of making Chinese Beef Chow Mein from scratch. Whether you’re an experienced cook or a beginner in the kitchen, this recipe is easy to follow and sure to impress.

Ingredients for Chinese Beef Chow Mein

Before starting the cooking process, gather all the ingredients. You will need:

For the Beef Marinade:

  • 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper

For the Chow Mein:

  • 12 oz (340g) chow mein noodles (fresh or dry)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for stir-frying)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 1/2 cup snap peas
  • 1/2 cup bean sprouts
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening sauce)

Preparing the Beef

The first step in making a great Beef Chow Mein is preparing the beef.

Slice the Beef: Choose a tender cut of beef, such as flank steak or sirloin. Slice it thinly against the grain. Thin slices ensure the beef cooks quickly and remains tender.

Marinate the Beef: In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce, 1 teaspoon of sesame oil, 1 teaspoon of cornstarch, and 1/2 teaspoon of white pepper. Add the sliced beef to the marinade, mixing well to coat. Let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. This marinating process will infuse the beef with flavor and help it remain tender during cooking.

Cooking the Chow Mein Noodles

While the beef marinates, you can prepare the chow mein noodles.

Boil the Noodles: Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the chow mein noodles and cook them according to the package instructions. If using fresh noodles, the cooking time will be short (about 2-3 minutes), while dry noodles may take a little longer.

Drain and Rinse: Once the noodles are cooked, drain them and rinse under cold water. This helps stop the cooking process and prevents the noodles from becoming mushy. Set the noodles aside.

Stir-Frying the Beef

Now it’s time to cook the marinated beef.

Heat the Wok: Place a wok or large frying pan over high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and heat it until it starts to shimmer.

Cook the Beef: Add the marinated beef to the hot pan in a single layer. Let it sear for about 1-2 minutes without stirring. Once it starts to brown, stir-fry the beef for another 2-3 minutes, until it is fully cooked. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside.

Stir-Frying the Vegetables

Now it’s time to cook the vegetables, which will add color, texture, and flavor to the dish.

Stir-Fry the Vegetables: In the same wok or pan, add a little more oil if necessary. Add the onions and stir-fry for about 2 minutes, until they start to soften.

Add the Bell Pepper and Carrots: Add the red bell pepper and shredded carrots. Stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes. The vegetables should remain slightly crisp, adding a nice crunch to the dish.

Add Garlic and Ginger: Add the minced garlic and ginger to the pan and stir-fry for an additional 1-2 minutes. This will infuse the vegetables with a fragrant aroma.

Add Snap Peas and Bean Sprouts: Finally, add the snap peas and bean sprouts, and stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes. These vegetables should remain crisp and tender, providing texture and freshness.

Making the Sauce

The sauce is what brings all the flavors together in the Beef Chow Mein.

Combine the Sauce Ingredients: In a small bowl, mix together 3 tablespoons of soy sauce, 2 tablespoons of oyster sauce, 1 tablespoon of hoisin sauce, 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar, and 1/2 teaspoon of sugar. If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix in 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to form a slurry.

Add the Sauce to the Wok: Once the vegetables are cooked, pour the sauce mixture into the wok. Stir well to coat the vegetables in the sauce. Allow the sauce to simmer for about 2-3 minutes until it thickens slightly.

Combining Noodles, Beef, and Vegetables

Now, it’s time to bring everything together.

Add the Noodles: Add the cooked noodles to the wok with the vegetables and sauce. Use tongs or chopsticks to toss the noodles and vegetables together, ensuring they are evenly coated in the sauce.

Add the Beef: Return the cooked beef to the wok, mixing it in with the noodles and vegetables. Stir everything together and cook for another 1-2 minutes, allowing the flavors to combine.

Adjust the Flavor: Taste the dish and adjust the seasoning if needed. You can add more soy sauce for saltiness or a little sugar for sweetness.

Serving the Chinese Beef Chow Mein

Once everything is cooked and well-mixed, it’s time to serve.

Plate the Dish: Transfer the Beef Chow Mein to serving plates. You can garnish it with a sprinkle of sesame seeds or green onions for added flavor and a pop of color.

Enjoy!: Serve the Beef Chow Mein immediately while it’s hot. This dish pairs wonderfully with a side of steamed rice or as a standalone meal.

Tips for Making the Perfect Beef Chow Mein

Use Fresh Noodles: Fresh chow mein noodles will provide the best texture and flavor. If you can’t find fresh noodles, dry noodles work fine as well.

Don’t Overcook the Beef: Overcooking the beef can make it tough. Stir-fry the beef just until it’s cooked through, and remove it from the pan promptly.

Customize with Vegetables: Feel free to add or substitute vegetables based on what you have on hand. Broccoli, mushrooms, and bok choy are great additions.

Balance the Sauce: If you prefer a tangier sauce, increase the rice vinegar. For a sweeter sauce, add a little more sugar or hoisin sauce.

Use High Heat: Stir-frying requires high heat to get the best results. Make sure your wok or pan is hot before adding the ingredients.

Conclusion

Making Chinese Beef Chow Mein is a rewarding process that results in a flavorful, satisfying meal. The tender beef, crisp vegetables, and savory sauce come together perfectly in this dish. Whether you’re cooking for yourself, your family, or guests, this recipe is sure to be a hit. By following these simple steps, you can easily recreate this classic Chinese dish in your own kitchen.

Enjoy your homemade Chinese Beef Chow Mein!
