A voluntary recall has been issued for several prepared food products linked to a listeria outbreak, according to the USDA. The recall affects items sold by Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away. So far, 10 hospitalizations have been reported—eight in California and two in Nevada.
The outbreak was first identified in 2024, but health officials struggled to find its source. In April 2025, the FDA reopened its investigation after detecting listeria in environmental samples collected from Fresh & Ready Foods during a routine inspection.
The recalled products have “Use By” dates ranging from April 22 to May 19. They were distributed in Arizona, Washington, California, and Nevada. These items were likely sold between April 18 and April 28 at retailers and food service locations, including hospitals, hotels, convenience stores, airports, and airlines.
Listeria is a serious foodborne illness. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, tiredness, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, it can cause headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
The CDC urges anyone who believes they may have consumed the affected products and is experiencing symptoms to contact their healthcare provider immediately.
While foodborne illnesses have always posed a risk, recent outbreaks remind consumers that even ready-to-eat foods are not always safe. The 2018 Panera E. coli outbreak is one such example where common food items, like salads, proved hazardous.
As investigations continue, health officials emphasize the importance of food safety and proper handling. For now, consumers are advised to check product labels and stay alert to recall notices.
