The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has elevated the recall of Frito-Lay’s Lay’s Classic Potato Chips to Class I, the most serious recall classification, following the discovery of an undeclared milk allergen in certain bags.
First announced in December, the recall impacts 13-ounce Party Size Lay’s Classic Potato Chips sold in Oregon and Washington. Although no allergic reactions have been reported yet, the FDA warns that consuming these chips could trigger severe allergic responses in individuals with milk sensitivities.
A Class I recall indicates that the FDA believes the product poses risks of life-threatening allergic reactions and severe health consequences, reserved for the gravest food safety concerns.
To check if your chips are part of the recall, look for the UPC Code 28400 31041, “Guaranteed Fresh” dates of Feb. 5, 2025, or Feb. 11, 2025, and manufacturing codes 6462307xx or 6463307xx on the bag. These chips were sold at select stores in Oregon and Washington, as well as some online retailers.
If you have a milk allergy, do not eat the chips; instead, discard them or return them for a refund. For those without a milk allergy, the chips are safe to consume, as the recall stems from mislabeling, not contamination.
