What Dessert Goes with Ribs?

Chinese-style ribs are a popular dish known for their tender texture and flavorful glaze. Making them in the oven is a simple and effective way to achieve that melt-in-your-mouth goodness without needing a grill or stovetop. In this article, we will guide you step by step on how to make Chinese ribs in the oven, covering everything from choosing the right ingredients to cooking and serving tips.

What You Need to Make Chinese Ribs

Before diving into the recipe, it’s important to gather all the necessary ingredients and tools. You’ll need the following:

Ingredients for the Marinade:

Pork Ribs: Choose baby back ribs or spare ribs for the best result. Baby back ribs are tender and cook faster, while spare ribs are more meaty.

Soy Sauce: This is the base of your marinade. It adds saltiness and umami to the ribs.

Hoisin Sauce: A key ingredient in Chinese cooking, hoisin sauce gives the ribs a sweet and savory flavor.

Brown Sugar: This helps caramelize the ribs and gives them a slight sweetness that balances the savory flavors.

Rice Vinegar: Adds a bit of tanginess to cut through the richness of the ribs.

Garlic: Fresh garlic will add aromatic depth to the marinade.

Ginger: Fresh ginger adds a warm, spicy kick.

Chinese Five Spice Powder: This blend of spices (typically cinnamon, cloves, fennel, star anise, and Sichuan peppercorns) is essential for that authentic Chinese flavor.

Sesame Oil: Adds a nutty flavor that complements the other ingredients.

Honey or Molasses: For added sweetness and a glossy finish.

Salt and Pepper: To taste.

Equipment:

Oven: To bake the ribs.

Baking Sheet: A large sheet to place the ribs on while they cook.

Aluminum Foil: To cover the ribs while they cook to keep them moist.

Pastry Brush: To apply the marinade to the ribs.

Sharp Knife: To separate the ribs if needed.

Preparing the Ribs

The first step in making delicious Chinese ribs is preparing the pork ribs properly.

1. Clean the Ribs

Before marinating, you need to clean the ribs. Rinse them under cold water to remove any impurities. Pat them dry with a clean towel. It’s also a good idea to remove the thin membrane from the back of the ribs. This helps the marinade penetrate better and ensures a more tender result. Use a knife to gently lift the membrane and pull it off.

2. Cut the Ribs into Sections

You can cook the ribs whole or cut them into smaller sections. Typically, ribs are cut into individual pieces or 2-rib sections for easier handling. This allows the marinade to coat each piece thoroughly and ensures even cooking.

3. Preheat the Oven

Set your oven to 300°F (150°C) to get it ready for cooking. This low and slow method will help cook the ribs gently, making them tender.

Making the Marinade

The next step is preparing the marinade. This blend of sauces, spices, and aromatics is what gives Chinese ribs their signature flavor.

1. Mix the Ingredients

In a medium bowl, combine the following:

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger (grated)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons honey or molasses
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Stir the ingredients until the sugar dissolves and everything is well combined. Taste the marinade and adjust seasoning if needed, adding more sugar for sweetness or more soy sauce for saltiness.

2. Marinate the Ribs

Place the ribs in a large resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the ribs, making sure they are coated evenly. Seal the bag or cover the dish with plastic wrap. Let the ribs marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight. The longer the ribs marinate, the more flavorful they will be.

Baking the Ribs in the Oven

Once the ribs have marinated, it’s time to cook them in the oven.

1. Prepare the Baking Sheet

Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil to make cleanup easier. You can also place a cooling rack on top of the baking sheet if you prefer the ribs to cook on all sides. This will allow the heat to circulate around the ribs, ensuring even cooking.

2. Bake the Ribs

Remove the ribs from the marinade (but keep the marinade for later use) and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Cover the ribs with another layer of aluminum foil. This will keep the moisture in and ensure the ribs cook evenly. Bake the ribs in the preheated oven for 2.5 to 3 hours, or until they are tender and cooked through.

3. Baste the Ribs

About 1 hour before the ribs are done, remove the top layer of foil and baste the ribs with some of the reserved marinade. You can use a pastry brush to apply the marinade evenly over the ribs. This will give them a glossy, sticky finish and intensify the flavor.

4. Crisp the Ribs

After basting the ribs, return them to the oven, uncovered, for another 30 to 45 minutes. This will allow the glaze to caramelize and the ribs to become slightly crispy on the outside. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning.

5. Check for Doneness

To check if the ribs are done, gently pull a bone from the rib rack. If it comes off easily, the ribs are cooked. Alternatively, you can use a meat thermometer to check for an internal temperature of 190°F (88°C) for tender ribs.

Serving the Chinese Ribs

Now that your ribs are cooked and beautifully caramelized, it’s time to serve them.

1. Rest the Ribs

Before serving, let the ribs rest for about 10 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute, keeping the meat tender and juicy.

2. Slice the Ribs

Use a sharp knife to slice the ribs into individual pieces or sections. Arrange them on a serving platter, and feel free to drizzle any remaining marinade over the ribs for extra flavor.

3. Garnish the Ribs

For a finishing touch, you can garnish the ribs with chopped green onions, sesame seeds, or a sprinkle of cilantro. These garnishes add color, texture, and a burst of freshness to the dish.

Tips for Perfect Chinese Ribs

Here are some helpful tips to ensure your Chinese ribs come out perfectly:

1. Use Fresh Ingredients

For the best flavor, use fresh garlic, ginger, and spices. The freshness will make a noticeable difference in the flavor of the marinade.

2. Low and Slow Cooking

The key to tender ribs is cooking them low and slow. If you cook them at too high of a temperature, the meat may become tough and dry. Stick to the 300°F temperature and be patient.

3. Don’t Skip the Basting

Basting the ribs with the marinade during the cooking process helps to build up the flavor and glaze. This also prevents the ribs from drying out.

4. Add Spice for Extra Kick

If you enjoy spicy food, feel free to add chili paste or red pepper flakes to the marinade to give your Chinese ribs some heat.

5. Serve with Rice or Vegetables

Chinese ribs are often served with steamed white rice, stir-fried vegetables, or a side of pickled vegetables. The rice soaks up the flavorful sauce, while the vegetables provide a nice crunch and balance to the rich ribs.

Conclusion

Making Chinese ribs in the oven is a straightforward and rewarding process. With the right marinade, patience, and a few simple steps, you can create tender, flavorful ribs that will impress your family and friends. Whether you’re preparing them for a special occasion or simply craving something savory and satisfying, these Chinese ribs will quickly become a favorite in your recipe collection.

Enjoy your meal and savor the flavors of your homemade Chinese ribs!
