In a statement to Parliament, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reassured the nation that despite the ongoing global crisis, Bangladesh’s food security remains protected.
The Prime Minister made these remarks in response to a query from Md Shahiduzzaman Sarkar, a Member of Parliament from the ruling Awami League representing Naogaon-2.
During the question-and-answer session chaired by Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Prime Minister Hasina emphasized that Bangladesh has achieved food self-sufficiency. The government has been diligently working to maintain this self-sufficiency in food production.
She noted that the global supply chain for various commodities, including food, has been disrupted due to factors such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, the government has been taking continuous measures at both national and international levels to ensure food security.
Prime Minister Hasina, who also serves as the leader of the House, proudly mentioned that Bangladesh has become a global role model for food security. She highlighted the remarkable growth in food grain production over the years, citing that it had increased from 328.96 lakh metric tonnes in the fiscal year 2008-09 to 477.68 lakh metric tonnes in the fiscal year 2022-23.
These reassuring statements underscore the country’s dedication to securing its food supply and ensuring that its citizens have access to adequate and stable food resources amid global challenges.
