A recent outbreak of food poisoning has affected eight individuals who dined at Muwu BBQ, a well-known Mainland barbecue chain located in Mong Kok. The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) has launched an investigation into three linked cases of food poisoning, suspected to be caused by norovirus and Salmonella.
According to initial findings, the incidents occurred between June 19 and June 21 at the restaurant, where patrons consumed items including grilled oysters and lamb kebabs. The first case involved two women, aged 17 and 48, who experienced symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and fever approximately 33 to 43 hours after their meal on June 19.
A subsequent cluster affected four individuals, two men and two women aged between 30 and 49, who developed similar symptoms 33 to 56 hours after dining at the same establishment on June 20. The third case involved a 24-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman who fell ill 34 to 37 hours after eating there on June 21.
Of the eight affected individuals, four sought medical advice but none required hospitalization; all are reported to be in stable condition.
Following the reports, officers from the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) conducted an inspection of Muwu BBQ on June 24 and immediately ordered the suspension of the sale of implicated food items. They also mandated a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the premises.
Investigations by both the CHP and the CFS are ongoing to ascertain the exact cause of the outbreak and prevent further incidents.
Established in 2003 in Shenzhen, Muwu BBQ expanded to Hong Kong in April with stores in Mong Kok and Shek Tong Tsui. The chain is recognized for its affordable barbecue and skewer offerings. Invest Hong Kong welcomed the opening of these outlets as a testament to Muwu BBQ’s confidence in Hong Kong’s vibrant food and beverage sector, highlighting its commitment to global expansion through the city.
The Associate Director-General of Investment Promotion for InvestHK, Jimmy Chiang, underscored Muwu BBQ’s contribution to Hong Kong’s culinary landscape, emphasizing its role in enhancing the city’s appeal as a global dining destination.
