How to Cook Cauliflower Chinese Style

Cauliflower, a versatile vegetable often overlooked, can be transformed into a delightful dish with a Chinese twist. From crispy stir-fries to flavorful braises, there are numerous ways to enjoy cauliflower with Chinese cooking techniques. This article will guide you through various methods to cook cauliflower Chinese style, ensuring you achieve delicious and authentic results.

Preparing the Cauliflower

Before diving into the cooking process, it’s crucial to prepare the cauliflower correctly.

Cleaning the Cauliflower

Step 1: Rinse the cauliflower under cold running water.

Step 2: Use a vegetable brush to gently scrub the surface, especially in the crevices.

Step 3: Pat the cauliflower dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

Cutting the Cauliflower

Step 1: Remove the outer leaves and the stem.

Step 2: Cut the cauliflower into small florets. Aim for even sizes to ensure uniform cooking.

Step 3: If you prefer, you can also slice the stem thinly and use it in your dish.

Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Garlic and Oyster Sauce

Stir-frying is a quick and easy way to cook cauliflower with a delicious Chinese flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium-sized cauliflower, cut into florets
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt, to taste
  • Water, as needed
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water (for thickening, optional)

Chopped green onions, for garnish

Instructions:

  • Step 1: Heat vegetable oil in a wok or large pan over medium-high heat.
  • Step 2: Add the minced garlic and stir-fry until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
  • Step 3: Add the cauliflower florets and stir-fry for 5-7 minutes, until they start to turn tender and slightly browned.
  • Step 4: In a small bowl, mix the oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Pour this mixture over the cauliflower and stir well.
  • Step 5: Add a small amount of water if the pan becomes too dry. Continue to stir-fry until the cauliflower is fully coated in the sauce and cooked to your liking.
  • Step 6: If desired, add the cornstarch mixture to thicken the sauce. Stir well and cook for another minute.
  • Step 7: Garnish with chopped green onions and serve hot.

Cauliflower Fried Rice

Turn leftover cauliflower into a nutritious and flavorful fried rice dish.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 3 cups cooked and cooled jasmine or basmati rice (optional, for added texture)
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Chopped green onions and sesame seeds, for garnish

Instructions:

  • Step 1: Heat vegetable oil in a large pan or wok over medium-high heat.
  • Step 2: Add the minced garlic and chopped onion. Stir-fry until fragrant and the onion is translucent.
  • Step 3: Add the diced carrots and cauliflower rice. Stir-fry for 5-7 minutes, until the cauliflower rice is tender and the carrots are soft.
  • Step 4: Push the vegetables to the side of the pan and pour the beaten eggs into the empty space. Scramble the eggs until cooked, then mix with the vegetables.
  • Step 5: If using, add the cooked and cooled rice. Stir well to combine.
  • Step 6: Pour in the soy sauce and oyster sauce. Stir-fry until all ingredients are well coated with the sauce.
  • Step 7: Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Step 8: Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Serve hot.

Braised Cauliflower with Soy Sauce and Five-Spice Powder

Braising cauliflower gives it a tender texture and deep, flavorful sauce.

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium-sized cauliflower, cut into florets
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Chinese rice wine or dry sherry (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1 cup water or vegetable broth
  • Salt, to taste

Chopped green onions, for garnish

Instructions:

  • Step 1: Heat vegetable oil in a large pan or wok over medium-high heat.
  • Step 2: Add the minced garlic and chopped ginger. Stir-fry until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
  • Step 3: Add the cauliflower florets and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until they start to brown slightly.
  • Step 4: In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, rice wine (if using), sugar, five-spice powder, and water or vegetable broth. Pour this mixture over the cauliflower.
  • Step 5: Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pan and let the cauliflower braise for 10-15 minutes, until tender.
  • Step 6: Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt if necessary.
  • Step 7: Garnish with chopped green onions and serve hot.

  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Chopped green onions, for garnish

Instructions:

  • Step 1: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large pan or wok over medium-high heat.
  • Step 2: Add the sliced pork and stir-fry until cooked through and slightly browned, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the pork from the pan and set aside.
  • Step 3: In the same pan, add the remaining vegetable oil.
  • Step 4: Add the minced garlic, sliced onion, and sliced red bell pepper. Stir-fry until the vegetables are tender and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Step 5: Add the cauliflower florets and stir-fry for 5-7 minutes, until they start to turn tender.
  • Step 6: In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Pour this mixture over the vegetables and pork. Stir well to combine.
