Renowned French Gastronome Explores Deeper Perspectives on Food

What Dessert to Eat on a Hot Summer Day for Dinner

French gastronome Nicolas Kenedi recently shared his insightful perspectives on food during a visit to Beijing, prompting us to reconsider the role of food beyond mere sustenance.

Kenedi emphasized the importance of food that not only fills but truly nourishes. “Good food is the food that feeds you,” he noted, cautioning against unhealthy options that lead to imbalances in the body, contributing to ailments like obesity and diabetes.

In advocating for healthier eating habits, Kenedi encouraged individuals to prioritize nutritious homemade meals over convenient yet unhealthy delivery options. He stressed the value of dedicating time away from screens towards cooking, underscoring that “to live a good life, you have to take care of your beauty and health.”

As a board member of the International Academy of Gastronomy (AIG), Kenedi champions healthy eating principles such as reducing sugar intake, consuming less animal protein, and opting for minimally processed foods. These principles are echoed in AIG’s 10 proposals unveiled on its 40th anniversary last year, emphasizing the importance of gastronomy in preserving health, understanding food, and fostering a friendly dining environment.

Kenedi’s efforts extend beyond personal health to environmental stewardship and culinary heritage preservation. He collaborates on historical projects that uncover France’s rich gastronomic history through meticulously curated menus and archival materials. These initiatives, exemplified by volumes like “De Gaulle at Table” and “Versailles: The Gastronomic Revolution,” aim to educate and inspire through culinary history.

Moreover, Kenedi leverages gastronomy as a diplomatic tool, recognizing its intrinsic link to diplomacy. He orchestrates significant dining events that re-create historical menus, celebrating cultural and historical milestones.

As China and France commemorate 60 years of diplomatic ties, Kenedi acts as a culinary ambassador, highlighting the unique characteristics of both Chinese and French cuisines. Despite their differences, both nations share a passion for culinary excellence and the finest ingredients.

Kenedi’s insights underscore the profound connection between food, culture, and diplomacy, encapsulating the essence of gastronomy as a conduit for understanding, appreciation, and collaboration across borders.
