What Dessert Can You Make with Grapes

Grapes are a delightful and versatile fruit that can enhance the taste and presentation of various desserts. Whether you’re looking for a simple snack, an elegant dinner party dessert, or a fun treat to make with kids, grapes can be a star ingredient. In this article, we’ll explore several delicious desserts you can make with grapes, along with step-by-step explanations and tips to ensure success.

Grape Sorbet

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups red or green grapes, stems removed
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions:

Blend Grapes: In a blender, puree the grapes until smooth. You may need to stop and scrape down the sides occasionally.

Cook Mixture: In a saucepan, combine the grape puree, sugar, and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to simmer.

Simmer and Stir: Let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent sticking.

Cool and Chill: Remove from heat and stir in the lemon juice. Let the mixture cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until thoroughly chilled.

Freeze and Blend: Pour the chilled mixture into an ice cream maker and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to churn into sorbet. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into a shallow container and freeze, stirring every 30 minutes until firm but scoopable.

Tips:

  • For a smoother texture, you can push the sorbet through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any pulp or seeds.
  • Serving the sorbet with a dollop of whipped cream or a sprinkle of fresh mint leaves can elevate its presentation.

Grape and Almond Tart

For the crust:

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1-2 tablespoons ice water

For the filling:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 cups seedless red or green grapes, halved
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Instructions:

Prepare Crust: In a food processor, combine the flour, powdered sugar, and butter. Pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the egg yolk and pulse again. Gradually add ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough forms a ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Roll Out Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough into a 12-inch circle. Transfer to a tart pan with a removable bottom and press the dough into the bottom and sides. Trim any excess dough. Prick the bottom of the dough with a fork.

Bake Crust: Line the dough with parchment paper and fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15 minutes. Remove the weights and parchment paper, and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown. Let cool.

Prepare Filling: In a bowl, whisk together the heavy cream and honey until smooth. Arrange the grape halves in a single layer on the cooled crust. Sprinkle the almonds and flour evenly over the grapes. Pour the cream mixture over the top.

Bake Tart: Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes, or until the filling is set and the almonds are golden brown. Let cool completely before slicing.

Tips:

  • For a crunchier texture, toast the almonds in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes before using.
  • If you prefer a less sweet filling, reduce the amount of honey slightly.

Grape Jelly

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups seedless grapes (red or green)
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 4 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 ounces liquid fruit pectin

Instructions:

Prepare Grapes: Rinse the grapes and pat them dry. Remove any stems or imperfections.
Cook Grapes: In a large saucepan, combine the grapes, water, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for about 30 minutes, or until the grapes are very soft and broken down.

Puree Grapes: Use an immersion blender to puree the grapes directly in the saucepan until smooth. Alternatively, you can transfer the mixture to a blender and puree in batches.

Prepare Jelly Bags: Line a colander with several layers of cheesecloth or a jelly bag. Place the colander over a large bowl. Pour the pureed grape mixture into the cheesecloth or jelly bag and let it drip for at least 4 hours, or overnight, to extract all the juice. Do not squeeze the cheesecloth or jelly bag, as this will make the jelly cloudy.

Measure Juice: Measure the extracted grape juice. You should have about 3 cups. If not, adjust the amount of sugar and pectin accordingly (follow pectin package instructions for varying juice amounts).

Make Jelly: In a large saucepan, combine the grape juice, sugar, and pectin. Stir constantly over medium-high heat until the mixture reaches a full rolling boil. Boil for exactly 1 minute, stirring constantly.

Skim Foam: Skim off any foam that forms on the surface with a spoon.

Pour Jelly: Pour the hot jelly into clean, sterile jars, leaving 1/4 inch of headspace. Wipe the jars clean of any spills and secure the lids.

Process Jars: Process the jars in a boiling water canner for 5 minutes (adjust processing time for your altitude if necessary). Remove the jars from the canner and let them cool completely. Check for seals before storing.

Tips:

  • For a clearer jelly, you can strain the grape juice through a coffee filter after extracting it to remove any additional pulp or particles.
  • If you prefer a less tart jelly, reduce the amount of lemon juice slightly.

Grape and Cheese Platter

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups mixed seedless grapes (red, green, and purple)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 loaf of baguette or crusty bread, sliced
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  • Prepare Grapes: Rinse and pat the grapes dry. Arrange them in a single layer on a serving plate.
  • Mix Cheese and Honey: In a bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and honey until smooth and well combined.
  • Spread Cheese: Spread a thin layer of the honey-cream cheese mixture on each slice of baguette or bread.
  • Assemble Platter: Arrange the bread slices on the serving plate around the grapes.
  • Garnish: Garnish with fresh mint leaves for a pop of color and a hint of freshness.

Tips:

  • For a more indulgent treat, you can drizzle a little extra honey over the grapes and bread slices before serving.
  • Serving the platter with a selection of crackers or sliced apples can provide additional texture and flavor.

Grape Compote

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups seedless grapes, halved
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of cinnamon

Instructions:

  • Combine Ingredients: In a saucepan, combine the grapes, sugar, water, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
  • Cook Mixture: Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the grapes break down and the mixture thickens to a syrupy consistency, about 10-15 minutes.
  • Cool Compote: Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Tips:

  • For a more complex flavor, you can add a strip of orange peel or a few whole cloves to the mixture while cooking. Remove them before serving.
  • Serving the compote over vanilla ice cream or Greek yogurt can make it a more filling dessert.

Conclusion

Grapes are a versatile and delicious fruit that can be used in a variety of desserts. From refreshing sorbets and elegant tarts to simple compotes and cheese platters, grapes can add sweetness, tartness, and texture to your favorite treats. Whether you’re looking for a quick snack or a more elaborate dessert for a special occasion, grapes can be a star ingredient.
