How to Make Chinese Honey Chicken: A Step-by-Step Guide

Chinese Honey Chicken is a delicious and popular dish that combines crispy chicken pieces with a sweet, sticky honey sauce. It’s a perfect blend of savory and sweet flavors, often served in Chinese restaurants. Making it at home is easy and rewarding. In this article, we’ll walk you through every step of making this mouth-watering dish from scratch, along with tips and tricks to make sure it turns out perfectly every time.

Ingredients You Will Need

To make Chinese Honey Chicken, gather the following ingredients:

For the Chicken:

  • 1 lb (450g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 cup cold water or club soda
  • Vegetable oil for frying (enough to deep fry)

For the Honey Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (preferably low-sodium)
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar or white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (for thickening)
  • 1/4 cup water (to dissolve cornstarch)

For Garnish:

  • Sesame seeds (optional)
  • Green onions (optional, finely chopped)

Preparation: Preparing the Chicken

Step 1: Cut the Chicken

Begin by cutting the chicken breasts or thighs into bite-sized pieces. Try to keep the pieces uniform in size so they cook evenly. If you prefer, you can use chicken tenders or other boneless cuts of chicken.

Step 2: Make the Batter

In a medium bowl, mix together the cornstarch, flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir well to combine.

Next, add the egg and cold water (or club soda) to the dry mixture. Mix until you have a smooth batter. The consistency should be thick but pourable. If it’s too thick, you can add a bit more water to reach the desired consistency.

Step 3: Coat the Chicken

Dip each piece of chicken into the batter, making sure it is well-coated on all sides. Shake off any excess batter before frying. It’s essential that the batter is evenly spread over the chicken pieces to create a crispy coating when fried.

Step 4: Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or wok, heat enough vegetable oil to deep fry the chicken pieces. The oil should be around 350°F (175°C). You can test the temperature by dropping a small amount of batter into the oil—if it bubbles and rises to the surface immediately, the oil is ready for frying.

Step 5: Fry the Chicken

Carefully drop the battered chicken pieces into the hot oil in small batches. Avoid overcrowding the pan, as this can lower the temperature of the oil and lead to soggy chicken.

Fry the chicken pieces for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use tongs or a slotted spoon to remove the chicken and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Step 6: Make the Honey Sauce

While the chicken is frying, prepare the honey sauce. In a small saucepan, combine honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, water, garlic powder, and ground ginger. Stir the mixture over medium heat until it comes to a simmer.

Step 7: Thicken the Sauce

In a separate bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 1/4 cup of water to create a cornstarch slurry. Slowly add this mixture to the simmering sauce while stirring constantly. The sauce will begin to thicken within a minute or two.

Once the sauce reaches your desired thickness, remove it from the heat.

Step 8: Coat the Chicken in Honey Sauce

Now it’s time to coat the crispy chicken with the delicious honey sauce. Add the fried chicken pieces to a large mixing bowl. Pour the honey sauce over the chicken and gently toss to coat each piece evenly. Make sure all the chicken is well-covered with the sauce.

Step 9: Serve

Transfer the honey-coated chicken to a serving dish. If you like, garnish the dish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions for extra flavor and color.

Tips for Perfect Chinese Honey Chicken

1. Use Cold Water for the Batter

Cold water or club soda is essential to making a light, crispy batter. The cold temperature helps the batter stick to the chicken and creates a crispier texture when fried.

2. Do Not Overcrowd the Frying Pan

When frying the chicken, avoid overcrowding the pan. Fry the chicken in small batches to ensure that the oil temperature stays consistent and the chicken cooks evenly. Overcrowding will result in soggy chicken.

3. Adjust the Sweetness

If you prefer a sweeter sauce, you can add more honey. For a tangier flavor, increase the amount of vinegar. Adjust the balance to suit your taste preferences.

4. Double Coat the Chicken

For extra crunch, you can double coat the chicken. Dip the chicken into the batter, fry it, and then dip it into the batter again and fry a second time. This will give you an even crispier texture.

5. Serve Immediately

Chinese Honey Chicken is best served immediately while the chicken is crispy and the sauce is warm. If you wait too long, the chicken may lose its crispiness and become soggy.

6. Make Ahead

If you want to make the dish ahead of time, you can fry the chicken in advance and store it in an airtight container. Reheat it in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes before tossing it in the sauce.

How to Customize Chinese Honey Chicken

While the traditional version of Chinese Honey Chicken is made with simple ingredients, you can add your own personal twist. Here are a few ideas to make the dish unique:

Add Vegetables

For a more balanced meal, you can add vegetables like broccoli, bell peppers, carrots, or snap peas to the dish. Stir-fry the vegetables separately and toss them with the honey chicken for extra color and flavor.

Spicy Honey Chicken

If you like a bit of heat, you can add some chili flakes, Sriracha, or crushed red pepper to the honey sauce. The combination of sweet and spicy is delicious and adds a nice kick to the dish.

Orange Honey Chicken

For a citrus twist, you can substitute part of the honey with fresh orange juice. This adds a zesty flavor that complements the sweetness of the honey and the savory chicken.

Why You’ll Love This Dish

Chinese Honey Chicken is a crowd-pleaser that is perfect for family dinners, parties, or any occasion where you want to serve something delicious and impressive. It’s easy to make and offers the perfect balance of flavors. The crispy chicken combined with the sweet, sticky sauce is irresistible, and the versatility of the dish allows you to customize it to your tastes.

Conclusion

Making Chinese Honey Chicken at home is a rewarding experience. By following these simple steps and tips, you can create a restaurant-quality dish right in your kitchen. Whether you’re serving it for a special occasion or just want a tasty dinner, this dish will surely impress everyone at the table. Enjoy the crispy, sweet, and savory flavors that make Chinese Honey Chicken a beloved dish worldwide.
