The FDA has upgraded a recall for gluten-free bagels from New Grains Gluten Free Bakery to the highest threat level, after discovering the presence of undeclared eggs in several varieties.
The recall affects four types of bagels: cinnamon raisin, plain, blueberry, and multigrain. Approximately 100 units of each were affected, along with other products such as artisan white bread, multigrain bread, sourdough, and cinnamon raisin bread. These items were recalled due to a labeling error that failed to mention the inclusion of eggs, posing a significant risk to those with egg allergies.
The recall has been classified as Class I, which is the most serious level, indicating a risk of severe or life-threatening allergic reactions if consumed by individuals with egg allergies. The products in question were distributed between April 4 and April 21, with lot numbers 90-107, and were packaged in clear, vacuum-sealed plastic bags.
A total of 250 units of each product were distributed to retail locations in Utah. While no illnesses or injuries have been reported, consumers who purchased any affected items are advised to avoid consumption.
For those without an egg allergy, the recall may seem like a minor inconvenience, but it’s crucial to check labels carefully, especially when it comes to gluten-free products.
