A recent Instagram preview of the upcoming release has triggered a wave of criticism, with many longtime customers expressing disappointment over what they perceive as uninspired designs.
While Krispy Kreme is known for its creative brand collaborations, such as the popular Pop-Tarts and Fruity PEBBLES donut lines, some fans fear the new superhero range may lack the innovation of past offerings. Those past partnerships featured unique fillings, toppings, and glazes that reflected the essence of the brands involved. For example, the Pop-Tarts donuts recreated iconic flavors like Frosted Strawberry, while Fruity PEBBLES donuts featured a nostalgic cereal milk glaze. Collaborations with Oreo, M&M’s, and movie tie-ins like Ghostbusters also impressed with bold flavors and themed designs.
In contrast, early reactions to the superhero collection suggest skepticism. Critics say the donuts appear to rely too heavily on colored icing and basic decorations rather than new flavor experiences.
“They better have some unique flavors. They can’t just throw colored icing and call it a day,” one fan wrote on social media. Despite the criticism, the same user admitted, “The packaging is cute.”
Other commenters echoed the sentiment, calling for more than surface-level theming. “Hopefully these aren’t all just decorated & that’s it,” another wrote. Some fans were even harsher in their assessments. “HOW LAZY!
