TORONTO — Wendy’s Canada has unveiled a bold new menu item that’s stirring up strong reactions among fast-food fans across North America.
On Monday, May 19, the popular burger chain officially introduced its Grilled Cheeseburger across Canadian locations. The new burger features a quarter-pound of Canadian beef, caramelized onions, creamy mayonnaise, and a slice of melted cheese made from Canadian dairy. But what sets it apart is its bun — two grilled cheese sandwiches.
The item is the latest in a series of creative releases from Wendy’s Canada, following the recent launch of the Frosty Fizz, which had American fans wishing it was available south of the border as well.
Online reaction to the new Grilled Cheeseburger has been split. Some American fans jokingly called it a “horrible day to live in America,” while others were less impressed. One social media user sarcastically called it a “heart disease burger,” while another praised a similar version they once had from a food cart, calling it “life changing.”
Wendy’s fans also took to social media to share ideas for customizing the sandwich. Suggestions included adding bacon to make a “Grilled Cheese Baconator” or finding similar burgers at American chains like Five Guys and Sonic, as well as local favorites like Tully’s in Upstate New York and Sid’s on Long Island.
Wendy’s says the new creation is part of its ongoing effort to offer bold flavors and unique experiences.
“This year marks 50 years of Wendy’s in Canada, and to celebrate we’re giving Canadians the first taste of our new Grilled Cheese Cheeseburger,” said Hayley Kianoff, Wendy’s international culinary innovation manager. “It’s crafted with cheesy, juicy quality in every bite.”
While U.S. customers may not get the Grilled Cheeseburger just yet, they do have other limited-time offerings to enjoy. These include collectible items, several Frosty Swirls, a Tangerine Twist Lemonade, and a Cajun Crunch Sandwich. Wendy’s has also begun selling its beef patties in select grocery stores, giving fans an “insanely good” way to enjoy the brand at home.
