McDonald’s has introduced a brand-new McFlurry in celebration of the frozen treat’s 30th anniversary. The Birthday Cake McFlurry, featuring vanilla soft-serve blended with frosted cake-flavored confetti cookie dough pieces and birthday cake syrup, has sparked excitement—and frustration—among fans.
While the dessert has quickly gone viral online, it is only available in Canada for now. McDonald’s confirmed the limited-time item is being released exclusively in Canadian locations, aligning with the chain’s practice of tailoring its menus to regional tastes and availability.
The McFlurry, first created in 1995 by Canadian franchisee Ron McLellan in Bathurst, New Brunswick, has become a staple on McDonald’s menus worldwide. Its popularity has inspired competitors such as Dairy Queen, Sonic, Chick-fil-A, and Wendy’s to offer their own similar frozen desserts.
Despite the celebratory release, U.S. customers are voicing their disappointment. Social media users flooded the comment sections of food-focused Instagram pages, expressing frustration over the dessert’s unavailability in the U.S. Comments ranged from light-hearted jokes about the chain’s frequently broken ice cream machines to pointed remarks about American customer loyalty being overlooked.
“Does McDonald’s just hate Americans since we get no treats?” one user quipped. Others called on the fast-food giant to expand the new McFlurry’s reach beyond Canada.
So far, McDonald’s has not confirmed whether the Birthday Cake McFlurry will make its way to U.S. menus. The company says decisions on launching new items are based on several factors, including supply chains, consumer demand, operational logistics, and costs.
Though McDonald’s is an American company, its most exciting menu items don’t always debut in the U.S. For now, fans south of the border will have to wait—and hope—for a wider release.
