Nearly 100 pounds of smoked andouille sausage sold at Rouses Market stores in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana have been voluntarily recalled due to possible Listeria contamination, according to a notice issued by Bourgeois Smokehouse.
The recalled sausage was produced on May 12 and made available for retail purchase on May 13. Because the product was sold by weight at butcher counters, it does not carry a USDA inspection mark. Officials advise customers who purchased smoked andouille sausage at Rouses Market in the affected states to assume the product may be unsafe to eat.
The contamination was detected through routine product testing by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), which returned a positive result for Listeria monocytogenes—a bacteria that can cause serious illness, particularly in pregnant individuals, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported so far. However, consumers who have purchased the product should not consume it and are encouraged to return it to the point of purchase for a refund.
For health concerns related to possible listeriosis, individuals should contact their healthcare provider. Questions about the recall can be directed to Bourgeois Smokehouse at (985) 447-1604 or via email at [email protected].
While food recalls can be alarming, officials emphasize that they are often preventive measures meant to protect public health. Still, consumers are urged to remain vigilant when recalls are issued—especially those involving potentially harmful bacteria.
