How to Make Fresh Garlic Shrimp

Garlic Shrimp is a signature dish in Hawaii, especially renowned on the North Shore of Oahu. It combines the freshness of shrimp with the rich, aromatic flavor of garlic, making it a delight for seafood lovers. Whether you’re visiting Hawaii or just want to recreate this island delicacy at home, this guide will teach you how to make fresh Garlic Shrimp step-by-step.

Ingredients

To make fresh Garlic Shrimp, you’ll need:

  • Shrimp: 1 pound (about 500 grams), peeled and deveined
  • Butter: 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • Garlic: 2 cloves, minced or thinly sliced
  • Salt: 1/2 teaspoon (adjust to taste)
  • White Wine or Champagne: 1/3 cup (optional, can be replaced with chicken or vegetable broth)
  • Lemon: 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • Black Pepper: Freshly ground, to taste
  • Parsley: Finely chopped, for garnish (optional)
  • Olive Oil: 1 tablespoon (for cooking shrimp, optional)

Preparation

Before starting the cooking process, ensure all your ingredients are prepared and measured accurately. This will help maintain a smooth and efficient workflow in the kitchen.

Prepare the Shrimp:

  • Rinse the shrimp under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. Ensure they are completely dry to avoid excess moisture during cooking.
  • Peel and devein the shrimp if they are not already prepared. Set them aside in a bowl.

Prepare the Garlic: Mince or thinly slice the garlic cloves. Having them ready will save time during the cooking process.

Other Ingredients: Measure out the butter, salt, white wine or champagne, lemon juice, and black pepper.
Finely chop the parsley if you plan to use it for garnish.

Cooking Steps

Melt the Butter: In a large skillet or pan, melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat. You can also add 1 tablespoon of olive oil if you prefer a lighter cooking oil.

Sauté the Garlic: Once the butter is melted and hot, add the minced garlic. Sauté for about 1-2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant and starts to turn golden. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as it can become bitter and ruin the dish.

Cook the Shrimp:

  • Add the shrimp to the skillet in a single layer. You can cook them in batches if your skillet is small, to avoid overcrowding.
  • Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they turn pink and opaque. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • If you’re using olive oil, you can add it now and cook the shrimp in a combination of butter and oil.

Add the White Wine or Champagne: Pour in the white wine or champagne (or chicken/vegetable broth if using). Let it simmer for a minute or two. This will help to deglaze the pan and create a flavorful sauce.

Finish with Lemon Juice: Once the wine or broth has reduced slightly, squeeze the juice of 1/2 lemon over the shrimp. Stir well to combine the lemon juice with the buttery garlic sauce.

Season and Garnish:

  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed.
  • Remove the shrimp from the heat. Sprinkle with freshly ground black pepper and garnish with finely chopped parsley if desired.Serving
  • Serve the Garlic Shrimp immediately while hot. It can be served as a main dish with a side of rice or pasta, or as an appetizer.
  • For a complete meal, pair it with a fresh green salad or steamed vegetables.

Tips for Perfect Garlic Shrimp

Quality of Shrimp: Use fresh, high-quality shrimp for the best flavor and texture. If possible, buy shrimp that has been recently caught and is still firm and moist.

Don’t Overcook: Shrimp cook very quickly and can become tough if overcooked. Cook them just until they turn pink and opaque for the best texture.

Use Fresh Garlic: Fresh garlic adds a robust, aromatic flavor to the dish. Avoid using pre-minced garlic from a jar, as it won’t have the same flavor.

Deglaze the Pan: Adding white wine or champagne (or broth) helps to deglaze the pan and create a delicious sauce that coats the shrimp perfectly.

Balance the Flavors: The combination of butter, garlic, lemon juice, and white wine should be balanced. Taste the sauce as you cook and adjust the seasoning accordingly.

Variations

Spicy Garlic Shrimp: For a spicy kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños when sautéing the garlic.

Garlic Shrimp Pasta: Serve the Garlic Shrimp over cooked pasta for a hearty, satisfying meal. Toss the pasta with the shrimp and sauce in the skillet before serving.

Garlic Shrimp Salad: Use the shrimp and sauce as a topping for a fresh green salad. Add mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices, and feta cheese for a refreshing summer dish.

Conclusion

Making fresh Garlic Shrimp at home is a rewarding experience that brings the flavors of Hawaii to your kitchen. With its combination of buttery garlic, tangy lemon juice, and tender shrimp, this dish is sure to become a favorite. Follow the steps outlined above, and you’ll be able to create a delicious, restaurant-quality meal that your family and friends will love. Whether you’re planning a seafood dinner or just want to indulge in a tasty treat, Garlic Shrimp is a perfect choice. Enjoy!
