The August Egg Company of Hilmar, California, has voluntarily recalled approximately 1.7 million cartons of brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs. The recall follows a salmonella outbreak linked to these eggs, which has sickened 79 people across nine states, including Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, and Wyoming. Among those affected, 21 have been hospitalized, though no deaths have been reported.
The recalled eggs were distributed between February 3 and May 15, 2025, with sell-by dates ranging from March 4 to June 4 in California and Nevada, and up to June 19 in other states. They were sold at various retailers such as Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raley’s, Food 4 Less, Ralphs, and Walmart stores across the affected states.
Health officials from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that environmental samples from the August Egg Company’s processing facility tested positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis. The company has since redirected all eggs from its facility to an egg-breaking plant where the eggs are pasteurized to eliminate bacteria.
Salmonella infection symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and fever, typically appearing hours to a week after consumption. The infection can be severe or even fatal for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The CDC advises consumers to discard any recalled eggs or return them to the place of purchase and to thoroughly clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with the eggs to prevent further contamination.
August Egg Company has stated it is conducting a thorough internal review to prevent future incidents and is committed to implementing corrective measures to ensure food safety.
Consumers should check their egg cartons for plant codes P-6562 or CA5330 and sell-by dates within the affected range to identify recalled products. The investigation by the FDA and CDC is ongoing, with updates to be provided as more information becomes available.
